What does ‘Syrian ceasefire’ mean? Nothing!
The new UN peace envoy to Syria, Lahkdar Brahimi, seemed to have managed to broker a ceasefire in Syria for the 4-day holy Muslim celebration of Eid-al-Adha.
What actually happened?
560 people, including 235 civilians, were reportedly killed during the period which had been designated by the UN peace envoy as a truce. There were some 60 aerial strikes by Syrian military, apparently, just yesterday.
Further, the Air Force General Aduakkah Mahmud al-Khalidi was assassinated in a district of Damascus (according to state media, by “armed terrorist groups”).
Worse, Turkey’s Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said on Tuesday that his country has ruled out any further dialogue with Syria:
“There is no point in engaging in dialogue with a regime that continues to carry out such a massacre against its own people, even during [the Muslim religious festival of] Eid al-Adha.”
What now?
Where do we all go, when even Turkey, which has until now (and partly for its own political reasons, of course) tried to play an even hand in this crisis, washes its hands of the Syrian regime?
And, what does ‘ceasefire’ actually mean?
